Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F/43°C)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • ⅓ cup baking soda

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a mixing bowl, combine warm water and yeast; let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Prepare the dough: Stir in salt and half of the flour. Gradually add remaining flour to form a soft dough. Knead on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth.
  3. Let it rise: Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Shape pretzels: Punch down the dough, divide into equal pieces, roll into ropes, and twist into pretzel shapes.
  5. Boil with baking soda: Boil water and carefully add baking soda. Boil each pretzel for about 30 seconds before transferring to lined baking sheets.
  6. Add cheese & bake: Sprinkle shredded cheddar on top and bake at 425°F (220°C) for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
