A flavorful, crispy, and sweet-and-spicy Chinese dish, General Tso’s Chicken is a crowd-pleaser! Tender chicken pieces are fried to perfection and coated in a rich, tangy sauce thatβs the perfect balance of heat and sweetness. A great choice for a homemade takeout experience!

- 1 lb boneless chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces
- Β½ cup cornstarch
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil (for frying)
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tbsp fresh ginger, minced
- 3 tbsp soy sauce
- 3 tbsp rice vinegar
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
- 1 tsp chili garlic sauce (optional, for heat)
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- 2–3 green onions, chopped (for garnish)
- 1 tbsp sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Coat the chicken pieces evenly in cornstarch, making sure they are fully covered.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Fry the chicken pieces in batches, cooking until golden and crispy (about 4-5 minutes per batch). Remove and set aside.
- In the same pan, add garlic and ginger and sautΓ© for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
- In a small bowl, mix together soy sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, hoisin sauce, chili garlic sauce, and sesame oil. Pour this sauce into the pan and bring it to a simmer.
- Add the fried chicken back to the pan and toss until well-coated in the sauce.
- Garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds. Serve with rice and enjoy!
Notes
- Adjust the amount of chili garlic sauce to control the spice level.
- If you prefer a lighter version, you can bake the chicken instead of frying it.
